They say time flies when you're having fun. I can definitely attest to that. I can't believe it has already been a year since Kaleidoscope Sprinkles was created. Who knew that spending days surrounded by sprinkles could expedite time? Sprinkles maybe an undiscovered fountain of youth as well because they definitely provide so much childlike wonder and excitement. This past year has been incredible, so I decided to slow down time for a bit and reflect.
The summer of last year was a punctuation mark of events. The atmosphere felt solemn and restless after the recent losses of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, Elijah McClain and countless others. The world was at the peak of civil unrest and demanding respect for Black lives with protests and marches. People took to the streets for justice and to escape being stuck inside from COVID. The frustration of injustice, being quarantined and loss of Kobe provided the perfect storm for proclamation and passion.
Baking has always served as an outlet for stress and dealing with the perplexities of life. There's something about being able to create a masterpiece out of simple ingredients that does it for me. Last year I probably baked more than I an ever had before and thought I would.
I remember one recipe in particular, my Black Power Brookies. This decadent dessert was a mixture of red velvet cookies, cream cheese and brownies all in one. The combination served not only as an amazing flavor rush, but displayed the colors of the Pan-African flag. After creating these scrumptious treats I wanted to photograph them correctly. I had this elaborate idea to stack them on top of each other surrounded by matching sprinkles. I visited my usual shops to buy the sprinkles I wanted, only to discover no one had red, green and black sprinkle mixes. I eventually found some hodgepodge sprinkles to use for my photo, but I was dissatisfied. I took the disappointment and turned it into a business.
One year later Kaleidoscope Sprinkles stands here with sprinkle mixes for Black culture and creative bakers. Not only do we have sprinkle mixes but countless recipes on our blog, Cosmic Shimmers, Cupcake charms, accessories, etc. Who knows what else is in store in the future. I wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you to all my amazing supporters! I can't thank you enough for purchasing something or taking time out of your day just to read this blog. I love each and every one of you! I am incredibly amazed at the journey Kaleidoscope Sprinkles has taken me on. Not only does it serve as my outlet, but also my source of fun and inspiration. To be able to turn your passion into purchases is an absolute joy. I am looking forward to this continued Kaleidoscope exploration.
